If you have any missing teeth, you may fear that a partial denture is your only choice. However, dental bridges offer an alternative without the downside of dentures. If you would like to know more about dental bridges and the various types, keep reading.

1. Traditional Dental Bridge

A traditional bridge needs two healthy teeth on either side of the gap (missing tooth). The bridge has two dental crowns connected to a fake tooth. The dentist bonds the dental crowns to the anchor teeth, and the fake tooth makes it look like you no longer have missing teeth. These are durable because they use multiple teeth for support, but you'll need special floss to floss under the bridge and between the teeth and the fake tooth. Because they are durable, they may be able to replace multiple missing teeth.

2. Cantilever Bridge

A cantilever bridge works like a traditional bridge; it uses dental crowns to secure the bridge. However, it only uses teeth on one side for support. For this reason, they are common if you need to replace your second molars. Because they only have support on one side, they may be a little less durable. However, you can use regular floss to clean the bridge.

3. Maryland Bonded Bridge

A Maryland bonded bridge uses special flaps that the dentist bonds to the surrounding teeth. This puts less stress on anchor teeth, and the dentist doesn't need to file down the anchor teeth, which means the process is less invasive and reversible. However, because there is no crown for support, these types of bridges are less durable, and they may not be ideal for molars. Like a traditional bridge, you'll need special floss or flossing threaders to fully clean the bridge.

4. Implant-Supported Bridge

An implant-supported bridge uses titanium implants to support the artificial teeth/tooth. The dentist inserts the implants directly into the jawbone. In addition, the bone fuses with the titanium to create a strong hold. This makes implant-supported bridges incredibly durable, so you may be able to replace multiple teeth with one bridge. They are much more expensive than other bridge options, but they don't put wear and tear on healthy teeth, and they stimulate the jawbone to keep it healthy and strong.

Dental bridges are a great way to replace missing teeth. With so many options, you're sure to find the perfect solution for your needs and budget. If you would like to know more about dental bridges, contact a dentist in your area today.
